This is a rather interesting way to make Filter coffee. Based on the method of Scott Rao’s Filter detailed here. Churls created an adapter to fit a 51 mm IMS basket to the Aeropress to mimic this method. Message @churls.coffee on Instagram to order! https://www.instagram.com/churls.coffee/

The adapter is the 3D printed attachment that holds onto the Aeropress. The IMS espresso basket will have to be purchased separately. There is also a 51 mm 3D printed Tamper and Funnel available for purchase.

Ingredients:

  • 1x 51mm ims basket (14-16 g)
  • 1x Fellow Prismo
  • 1x Aeropress
  • 1x Churl’s Adapter

Nice to Haves:

  • 1x Churl’s tamper
  • 1x Churl’s funnel

This recipe is still a Work in Progress

  1. Grind at a setting that is finer than Aeropress but coarser than Espresso. I’ve tried KPro at 4.5 and Q2 Hept at 28 clicks
  2. Push the 51mm basket through the Churls Adapter. It should have a friction fit, and is snug
  3. Put a paper filter at the bottom of the basket
  4. Add the 15g dosage (feel free to play with this) to the basket
  5. Tamp
  6. Put a 2nd paper filter on top
  7. Add the Fellow Prismo stainless steel gasket on top
  8. Lock in the Aeropress
  9. Ideally use a glass mug of sorts so you can see drip. if not, just listen for drips
  10. Pour 90g hot water (I was using 99C temperature, but play with it. the water amount can vary too, to extract less ratio)
  11. Put the plunger on top and push down until there are some drips
  12. Hold the plunger in place and wait 2 minutes for the puck to Bloom
  13. After 2 minutes waiting, plunge the rest. 14) Dilute to your taste. either no dilution, or 1:10, or even 1:15

Why?

I chose to buy this to support a fellow coffee enthusiast to see if they could make a viable commercial product. It was based off the Joepresso. If the espresso basket was going to be replaced, why not just start from a clean slate? This product is the result of that quest.

I also bought this because I wanted to see if I could downsize my travel setup. The travel setup consists of bringing a Uniterra Nomad, an Aeropress, and a Kettle of some sort on the trips out. The Nomad simply takes up a huge amount of space. If I could convert the Aeropress into a pseudo-espresso maker, maybe it would work just enough as an espresso replacement.

Results

This was a fun journey and process to be diving in the realm of the niche products. From a financial point of view, the product doesn’t seem to necessarily make sense.

  • $40 Aeropress
  • $30 Fellow Prismo (or $5 if you can source just the Stainless Steel Mesh Screen
  • $30-40 for the IMS 51 mm Basket
  • $25 for the Churls Adapter (+$5 shipping)
  • $15 for the additional tamper and funnel

But if you have all these already, its a small piece to addon to the ever versatile Aeropress.

I’ve tried a couple of different beans to different results. I’ve not really liked the diluted product. You’d probably have to dilute it 1:10 at most to match pourover strength. I’ve drank it mainly as a concentrate and it’s been different. Not exactly espresso, but not exactly filter. The cleanup process is very clean due to the double paper sandwich nature of the puck.
